Grains, Seeds, Beans, and Nuts, Are They the Same?

In Indonesia, we recognize the words seeds and nuts as two different things. However, in English, seeds and nuts are still divided into grains, seeds, beans, and nuts. Grains and seeds are included in grains, while beans and nuts are included in legumes.

Grains

Grains are edible seeds of various plants in the Poaceae (Gramineae) family, which is one of the flowering plants whose stems have internodes. Such as, rice, wheat, corn, and so on. Grains are divided into two types, namely true cereals and pseudocereals.

True cereals are types of grains that come from the Poaceae family, for example rice, wheat, oats, corn, barley, rye, sorghum, and millet. While pseudocereals are types of grains that are not from the poaceae family, for example quinoa, buckwheat, and amaranth.

Seeds

Seeds are the seeds of flowering plants that have matured, for example, such as gnomes which come from sunflower seeds, then there are chia seeds which come from the flower seeds of the chia plant (Salvia hispanica), there are sesame seeds which come from sesame plants, and flax seeds or seeds derived from flax seeds.

Beans

Beans are a type of grain that comes from legumes, such as green beans, peanuts, kidney beans, peas, and soybeans. When viewed from its shape, legumes have a soft skin texture and are easy to peel by hand. Usually, one pod can contain one to six seeds.

Nuts

Nuts are a type of grain that comes from trees, for example, cashews, hazelnuts, pistachios, almonds and so on. So are nuts included in grains or nuts? We can conclude that the difference between grains and nuts is from the scope. Nuts are definitely grains, while not all grains are nuts. So pulses are a small subset of grains.
