Rolled Oat

Rolled oat or whole oat is a type of oat that is processed by steaming and rolling to produce flat and thin oat flakes. It has a thicker, coarser texture and requires a longer cooking time, usually around 15-20 minutes. Rolled oats retain most of the fiber and nutrients of whole oats.

Rolled oats are suitable for making granola, cookies, muffins, overnight oats and other baked goods. This is because rolled oats can absorb more water and still retain their shape well when cooked.

Quick Oat

Quick oat is a type of oat that is processed by grinding and cutting into smaller pieces than rolled oat. This process makes the texture of quick oats thinner, smoother and softens faster when cooked, usually only takes about 5-7 minutes of cooking time.

Because of its short cooking time, quick oats is suitable for making quick and practical oatmeal. Quick oats can also be used as topping for yogurt or smoothie because it can give a softer texture as topping.

Instant Oat

Instant oats are the finest and quickest cooking type of oats. The manufacturing process involves more extensive grinding and steam heating to obtain very thin and easily softened oat flakes.

Instant oats only require 2-3 minutes of cooking time by pouring hot water or hot milk. So these oats are often the choice for making breakfast in a quick time. Because of its smooth and flour-like texture, instant oats are also often used as a flour substitute in cake or pancake recipes.

So, which one is healthier?

Oats are a food that is rich in fiber, so oats have many benefits that are good for health such as, can control blood sugar, nourish the digestive system, help reduce weight, and reduce LDL levels. In addition to its fiber content, oats also contain iron, vegetable protein, vitamin B1 and antioxidants.

In addition to the nutrient content, knowing the glycemic index of oats is also very important, to avoid the rise of blood sugar in the body. Instant oat has a glycemic index of 83, quick oat has a glycemic index of 66, while rolled oat has a glycemic index of 55.

The higher glycemic index can cause a rapid rise in blood sugar. However, although there are types of oats that have a high glycemic index, oats have a low glycemic load. So, we can still benefit from the goodness of oats.
